Black Women & Girls

The Greenmount West Community Center serves all community members while offering enhanced programming for Black women and girls.

Read below to find out more about our targeted support for Black women and girls, a demographic that, historically and currently, is under supported and underfunded.

Baltimore Media Girls

Baltimore Media Girls is a digital storytelling program for middle and high school girls in our 2021-22 youth programming. It focuses on journalism voiced and created by Black girls from Baltimore. Led by our on-staff social worker, Akilah McCrorey, this program empowers our girls and highlights voices in and of our community.

2020 Youthworks Site

In the summer of 2020, the Greenmount West Community Center served as a YouthWorks job site. Using a hybrid model (in-person and virtual), we employed five girls ages 14-18. Over the course of five weeks, they received professional development training and social-emotional support. They were also equipped with technology to assist with their work and academics. Their summer goal was 1. to create a brand that represents themselves, and 2. to design and screenprint their brand logo on a minimum of three items in the Power Press.

Manifesting A Beautiful Reali-TEA

Beginning in September 2020, Manifesting A Beautiful Reali-TEA is an annual LOVEFEST for Black women and girls. Now entering its third year, this virtual back-to-school tea for Black women and girls has been generously supported by Ivy's Tea Co. and Grantmakers for Girls of Color. Past speakers and performers include Dr. Terri N. Watson, Tiffany L. Gill, Katyrah Love, Poetic Nonsense, Kish the Lioness, and GWCC youth Cydnē Carrington and Madeline White.

Project Thrive

An initiative of Black Women and Girls of Maryland, Project Thrive is part of our targeted support for Black women and girls. In the first stage of this project, we surveyed Black women over the age of eighteen throughout various zip codes in Baltimore City in order to determine their needs and what they feel is necessary for them to thrive. Are you interested in getting involved in this advocacy movement for Black women and girls? Send us an email here - we look forward to hearing from you!

C&H Podcast

In July 2021, two of our junior staff members, Ca’syah Watson and Helena Chambers, collaborated on the creation of C&H Podcast. The episode that they created, voiced, and edited focuses on Black girls and friendships, inspired by the book The State of Black Girls by Marline Francois-Madden, LCSW.
